Alibaba vs 1688: which platform should you buy from?
Unit price is only part of the decision. Language, payment, export logistics and buyer protection weigh just as much when you source from China.
Alibaba.com and 1688.com both belong to Alibaba Group and often list the same products, sometimes from the same suppliers. They are built for very different buyers, though, and that affects price, minimum order, payment, delivery and how much protection you get. Here is how to decide which one fits your project.
Two platforms, two markets
Alibaba.com is the group's international B2B marketplace. Suppliers there, whether factories or trading companies, sell to importers abroad and are used to export orders, export paperwork and English-speaking buyers.
1688.com is the domestic wholesale platform. It serves Chinese businesses: shops, e-commerce sellers, brands and wholesalers buying in China for the Chinese market. Alibaba has added some tools for overseas buyers in recent years, but the platform, its sellers and its logistics remain designed for domestic trade.
Side-by-side comparison

When Alibaba.com is the better choice
- You buy directly, without a local partner. Everything works in English, and you can pay with an international payment method.
- You need export support. Suppliers can quote FOB or CIF, book freight through your forwarder and produce commercial invoices and packing lists in the format customs expect.
- You want platform protection. Trade Assurance covers orders paid through Alibaba.com against agreed delivery and quality terms. It is only useful if the order details are precise, so write the specifications, delivery date and inspection criteria into the order.
- You order custom products in volume. Private label, custom moulds or packaging usually mean working with a factory directly, and many export-oriented factories are listed on Alibaba.com.
When 1688 is the better choice
- You want small quantities of many items. Low MOQs let you test products or build a mixed assortment without committing to thousands of units.
- You want the domestic price. For standard products, 1688 prices are often below Alibaba.com prices. Once you add agent fees, domestic delivery, consolidation and export costs, the gap narrows, so compare landed costs, not unit prices.
- You want to see the real market. 1688 shows the range and price levels Chinese buyers work with, which is useful for benchmarking an Alibaba.com quote.
- Your products are standard. Generic accessories, home goods, packaging or stationery often need no customisation beyond a label.
How to buy on 1688 from abroad
In practice, a foreign business cannot run a 1688 order smoothly on its own. Four things are missing:
- A Chinese-speaking buyer. Sellers answer in Chinese and negotiate quickly. Someone has to confirm specifications, stock, lead time and packaging before paying.
- A Chinese payment method. Orders are paid in RMB, usually through Alipay linked to a Chinese account.
- A delivery address in China. Sellers ship to a domestic warehouse, not to Europe.
- Consolidation and export. Goods from several sellers arrive separately. They need to be received, counted, checked, repacked if needed and shipped together with export documents.
A 1688 buying agent covers these four points. Vitalic Trading, for example, orders and pays in RMB, receives the goods in its warehouse, checks them against the listing and ships them in one consolidated shipment. Whoever you use, ask for a clear breakdown of product cost, fees, domestic shipping and international freight.
Risks on both platforms
Traders presented as factories
Many sellers describe themselves as manufacturers. On 1688 in particular, a large share are resellers. That is not a problem for standard products, but for custom work or large volumes you want the actual factory. Check the business licence and, when the stakes justify it, visit or audit the site.
Counterfeits and intellectual property
Both platforms carry listings that copy brands, designs or patented products. Importing counterfeit goods into the EU for sale is illegal, and customs can detain and destroy them at your cost. Be wary of branded products at unusually low prices and of listings that reuse well-known product photos.
Compliance
Neither platform guarantees that a product can be sold in the EU. On 1688, goods are made for Chinese standards, with Chinese labels and manuals. You remain responsible for CE marking where applicable, REACH, RoHS, GPSR and labelling. Our guide on importing from China into Europe lists the main requirements.
Listing versus reality
Photos are often shared between sellers, and the product delivered can differ in material, thickness or finish. Order samples, and inspect before goods leave China.
What about Taobao?
Taobao is Alibaba Group's consumer marketplace, closer to a retail site than a wholesale platform. Prices are retail, sellers are mostly small shops, and quantities are per unit. It can be useful to find a rare item, buy one or two samples or check what Chinese consumers pay, but it is not a sourcing channel for stock. For wholesale, 1688 is the domestic reference.
A practical approach
Many importers use both platforms. They benchmark prices and find standard items on 1688, and they work with verified exporters on Alibaba.com, or directly with factories, for custom or high-volume products. Whatever the platform, the same rules apply: verify the seller, get samples, fix the Incoterm in writing (see our guide on EXW, FOB and DDP) and inspect before paying the balance.
